SERVICES: Sustainable Design & Construction Initiative

Meyer Najem, over the past decade, has developed and embraced a broad commitment to sustainable design and construction practices that reach beyond the “LEED” notion. Sustainable design and construction charrettes, planning and building is stimulated by the never-slowing growth and demand of environmentally friendly buildings among real estate Owners, developers, and corporate Owner-occupants.

Studying and understanding the market trends for sustainable demand for potential client needs and goals requires diligent leaders, knowledgeable in the sustainability market. Meyer Najem employs U.S. Green Building Council accredited professionals (LEED AP BD+C, LEED Green Associates) and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) ICC-700 (Certified Green Professional) professionals whom have aided in the design and construction of over 445,500+ commercial building square footage grossing over $55,000,000.00.

Among these numbers, Meyer Najem was the Design/Builder for the 1st GOLD Certified Medical Facility/Hospital (Community Hospital South – Emergency Department Expansion)

As the “green” trend moves through (and empowers) the current marketplace - designers, builders and Owners have found multiple avenues to enhance the overall savings, health and sustainability of their buildings. There are options; good options that not only save Owners money, but also establish their end result – buildings that consume less energy and keep expenses down. What used to be “premium” products for achieving sustainable status now reside under the “status quo” priority, again showing us the competitive demand for “green” products today.

Since the start of the regional sustainable movement, Meyer Najem has stayed committed to promoting sustainable practices within local operations and on-site project teams:

  • Promote and educate, on a quarterly basis, up-to-date sustainable practices, requirements and recent changes.
  • Implementation of recycling programs to reduce landfill waste stream.
  • Disposal of obsolete computer and electronics to an IDEM approved recycling facility.
  • Interact and brainstorm education programs with the U.S. Green Building Council – Indiana Chapter members on a monthly basis (http://www.usgbc-in.org/index.php)
  • Provide in-house training to all employees preparing for the examinations and continuing education under the U.S. Green Building Council, NAHB & Energy Star Programs
  • Educate employees of completed projects that have surpassed the sustainable goals set forth at the beginning of the design – organization requirements, standard practices for design/construction and operations/maintenance methods.

Meyer Najem established this sustainability initiative to build the database for “green” construction principles most beneficial to our Owners. It is our commitment to “green” building that helps educate our employees to a) understand its effectiveness, b) portray that expertise/knowledge to new and existing clients and c) aid in the construction of smarter facilities.
